Since the end of the19th century the appeal of nature, the incredible light, the search for originality and exoticism has attracted the great masters of Modern Art to the Pyrenees Orientals. The presence of artists born in the region, like Maillol and Terrus, or from neighbouring Catalonia such as Hugué, or Desnoyer from the South of France, or those who came down from Paris like Matisse, Derain and Picasso, have all helped link this area with the first avant-garde artistic movement. This region which gave inspiration to many artists has also become mythical in the history of Modern Art. The 20th century confirmed this, and artists across the generations continue to bring new artistic ideas.
