A frontier zone between States since the Middle Ages, the territory which extends from the Pyrenees to the Corbières has always been threatened and therefore has always been protected. City walls and Royal fortifications bear witness to this across the Pyrenees. Medieval castles illustrate the power and influence of the Kings of Majorque and the organization of the Counts. 8 sites reflect the works of Vauban on the Catalan border. Mont Louis and Villefranche-de-Conflent make up part of the 14 major sites which France has submitted as candidates to UNESCO for World Heritage status.
